"Kyle! KYLE!"
For several weeks Joelle had been stuck in her room at the Obsidian Heart. For months they'd been stuck in Navahla, as Kyle insisted that they not travel while she was pregnant. Though the itch to wander never left her, she did understand that Kyle was wanting to look out for her, and for the babe she carried, so she was happy to do as he wished. But being relegated to her inne room was torture! She could not see her feet any longer, and she wasn't as graceful as she used to be; that's what pregnancy does - and she knew that, yet this was her first pregnancy so it was all very new to her and to Kyle!
Without assistance it was far too difficult, and dangerous for her to climb down the stairs and it took even more energy to get back up them so Maria and Kyle had made sure she had everything she needed in the room she shared with her beloved Kyle. Every few days the healer stopped by, her latest proclamation being, "That baby is stubborn, but it's time to meet the world. Here's some tea that should speed things along. I'll check back in the morning." Both Maria and Hana'lee checked on her in between times, making sure she had plenty to eat and drink in her room and Hana was kind enough to bring her new books to read every few days.
That had been a few hours ago, it certainly was not morning, it was shortly after dinnertime in fact and Elle had sent Kyle to the kitchen for something sweet; she craved chocolate and cherry - preferably together! He was barely gone a handful of minutes when she felt her water break and the baby wasting no time in deciding it was time to be born.
"Oh by the Six, Kyle, Kyle the baby's... it's time!"
Hana'lee had been moving down the hallway when she heard the yell, and popped her head in with wide eyes, "'Tis time, Elle? Are you sure? Should I send for the healer?"
"I'M SURE! YES!"
Hana'lee ducked out and sent the quickest runner to fetch the healer, while she made sure that Kyle knew what was going on, in case he had not heard the screams for him from Elle. Kyle, being the diligent man that he was, made it to the room in record time and began doing all that the healer had told him to do when the time came; in essence, keeping Elle calm. He brushed her hair from her face, and clasped her hand gently, assuring her that all would be well and urging her to remain calm.
The contractions ripped into her womb again and she let out a pained scream and squeezed poor Kyle's hand tightly as if hanging on for dear life. The pain passed quickly, but left her spent and beads of sweat forming on her forehead. To keep her attention, Kyle asked Elle about the child. What would she want to name the child if it were a girl, or a boy? What color eyes did she think the babe would have? Anything to keep her talking, and keep her as calm as could be.... then the pain hit again and she gripped the covers and wrenched them tightly as she let out another scream. Kyle stayed by her side throughout the contraction, then was at the door yelling out to anyone that would hear, "Where's the healer???"
"Here I am, here I am..." the healer dressed in the white clothing of a White Raven appeared at the top of the stairs with an assistant trailing behind. She patted Kyle's hand and gave him a reassuring smile then moved in quickly and set up. "Kyle, we've spoke of your job during this, I do hope you aren't like those noble born men who think it's best to listen to the screaming from outside the door. You get over here and help her get through it."
Joelle smiled a rather tender smile at Kyle as he headed to her side, she did not even consider that Kyle would want to be apart from her during this time. So when it was proffered as an option, she held her hand out just to make sure Kyle was not getting cold feet and was going to leave her to do this alone! Not her Kyle, though, he was right there by her side for it all.
Labor was intense, but quick. The baby had decided it was time to be born and by the gods that child got right to it. It was barely 15 minutes after the healer arrived that the baby began to crown - it's head was showing. Dark hair visible, the healer coached Elle along while Kyle assured her she was doing great, and that he loved her all the while she clutched his hands like lifelines still screaming and panting, crying and gasping for breath between contractions. "It will all be worth it. You will forget the pain..." whispered the healer. "One more push."
One more push, and within a moment Kyle and Elle would hear the sound of a baby's first cry. Their baby. At the sound of the cry, tears rolled down Elle's cheeks and she pulled Kyle's hand to her dry lips and kissed every knuckle while tears moistened his fingers. It wasn't long before the babe had been cleaned and swaddled, and the healer was offering the child to Elle.
She reached out, pulling that tiny babe to her chest, eyes glassy with tears as she looked at the little life. "It's a boy, a fine, healthy baby boy," said the healer then she stepped aside so the family could meet each other and began to clean up the room.
"A boy... it's a boy Kyle, your son. Our baby boy. Simon."
They'd discussed options for a boy and a girl and since the babe had turned out male, Simon it was.
"Our sweet Simon, look at that wild hair."
She laughed softly, and realized the healer was right. All that pain was forgotten, bathed instead in the joy of bringing life into the world, love, and family.
"I love you, both of you."
She gazed up towards him, such love and devotion in her watery brown eyes, then looked down at the tiny bundle in her arms that had quickly figured out how to nurse and smiled.
Simon, newborn son of Kyle and Joelle.
