(Not sure where else to post, so posted it here.)
Salrek had left the group a bit early the night before in order to study that creature that had lay siege to their home away from home. How dare it barge past their wards and barriers to interrupt their little get together. Such a rude creature. Not to mention that it tried to suck the life force from their bodies as if they were some magic item to be cleansed.
Spending most of the night standing back and letting those tools of his carve, cut, and dissect the Krya's 'body', setting each lobe of brain tissue in another pile until he managed to clean that spinal cord of all fatty matter and leaving that bone picked clean. Lifting a hand up to his chin now he seemed to be pondering to himself for a moment, eyes scanning each of those pieces of the Kyra on four separate tables, looking for what might come to mind to better enhance their wards and safety.
Taking one piece of the brain he would move it to a large container, placing it on top of the container as he added a tiny little ward to it. Nothing special really, but a small spark would be seen inside if the ward failed.
Time and time again he cast spells at the clear box, and time and time again each piece failed. Though near the early morning hours, just as the sun was starting to rise in the distance and the smell not so fresh dew claimed his senses from the underground laboratory it happened. The spinal column, placed atop the box, with a few of the smaller tendrils drawing down the side of the box had stopped his magic from flower inside.
Right then all five of the other would hear a rather loud and excited "Ah ha! I've done it!" clammer into their minds. Interrupting any thoughts they might be having, or dreams that were dreamt. But it had taken him all night, and many frustrating falures...So it deserved to be celebrated, if even just a little. With a wide spread smile at his lips he collected each item that was needed to make the 'amplifier' of sorts and faded away, only to appear floating just above the inne's roof where he soon went to work applying each piece carefully and precisely in order to enhance what was already there.
It wouldn't be an easy task, and some things may still need adjusting, but by the days end he would finally have the column perched atop the inne, those large tendrils slithering down the domed top just a bit to channel the magic cast on the outside of the inne inward and into the walls, and wards them selfs. Sure, magic could still be used inside, but at least it would help to keep magic from getting into the inne from the outside. Or, that was the goal at least.
