Your [HASH]challenge this week is to create a 7-Sentence NPC. The NPC can be for anything you want, just a random person, shopkeeper, someone in your backstory, or just someone for me to use in our quests and missions from anywhere in the world.
Example:
Rand the Elder is a blacksmith who has spent all his life in Sarkotos. He is a tall man with a heavy black beard. Rand is known for his great strength, skill as a blacksmith, and rather dim wit. He values his family above all, is honest to a fault, and has a great fondness for music. Uncomfortable and a man of few words with strangers, he is talkative and likes to sing with his close friends. With his shop on the main thoroughfare in Navahla, he hears many tales from outside the city, but often gets the facts mixed up due to his dim wit. He talks in a slow, deep drawl and pulls at his beard when talking to others.
Each of the following should be one sentence:
Sentence 1: Occupation & History
This first sentence serves as the introduction to the NPC, describing his occupation and giving a brief history of the character. If the NPC has a front, such as being a gem smith that is a cat burglar at night, this information can be provided in this sentence. A brief historical note can give the NPC more depth and indicate skills and knowledge not readily apparent to the PC's. For example, Rand the Elder could very well be Randall the Giantslayer, a retired adventurer well known throughout Sarkotos!
Sentence 2: Physical Description
The second sentence is a brief physical description of the NPC. In some cases this may give a hint as to an NPC's hidden occupation such as the note that a beggar has a flash of gold in his mouth.
Sentence 3: Attributes & Skills
The third sentence is about attributes and skills. Here, any attributes above or below average should be noted. Be sure to use our game terms to reference this, such as in OH we use strength, quickness, endurance, willpower, intelligence, perception and charisma. Any attributes not mentioned are assumed to be average. Any special skills can be mentioned, but they don't have to be associated with the NPC's current occupation. For example, if Rand is an average blacksmith but a great song writer, the sentence may not even mention blacksmithing, noting only his undiscovered talent for music composition.
Sentence 4: Values & Motivations
The fourth sentence is one of the most important from a roleplaying standpoint. This sentence describes the values that the PC's must discover and exploit in order to motivate an NPC to doing as they ask. This is particularly important if the PC's are asking the NPC to do something against their basic principles. For example, due to Rand's honesty, the PC's will have a difficult time convincing him to shoe a horse so that the horse will probably throw the rider after a short distance. Money probably won't help, however if the PC's threatened his family there is little doubt that Rand will shoe the horse as they desire (though probably hate them for it).
Sentence 5: Interactions with Others
This sentence describes how the NPC interacts with others, whether he is loud and obnoxious or condescending and rude, you can note this in the sentence.
Sentence 6: Useful Knowledge
This is also an important sentence, from the PC's point of view, as it describes what the NPC knows that may be of use to the PC's. This information may be simple, such as where a tired adventurer may get a good meal and bed for the night. On the other hand, it could be a key clue for the next adventure. Rand's knowledge is general, which should be the case in most descriptions. There should also be an indication on how reliable the information is. In some cases, what they NPC knows could be very specific like the location of a dragon's lair or who to talk to in order to get a buddy out of jail.
Sentence 7: Distinguishing Feature
The last sentence is used to describe a distinguishing feature or characteristic of the NPC. This gives the PC's something to remember the NPC by, possibly helping them locate him in the future. It is common for players to forget the names of NPC's, but if a distinguishing feature is noted, players can often recall the description if not the NPC himself. If they forget Rand's name they can still inquire after the blacksmith with the slow drawl who is always pulling at his black beard.
A few more samples:
Lady Erin of Feld
Lady Erin of Feld is the demure third daughter of the mayor of Feld in Sarkotos - at least, during the day she is. At night, Erin becomes the infamous Lady Darkthreat, an assassin who employs magic and poison to destroy her targets. Erin is a petite blonde with delicate features, and men often wish to protect her (she finds this amusing). She is a mage with an extensive knowledge of poisons and a high intelligence, quick reflexes, and the constitution of a horse. Lady Erin lives for the kill; she loves to get to know her victims intimately, using this knowledge to set up the perfect assassination. Lady Erin is always charming and warm and appears to engage in idle gossip while taking in her surroundings and subtly pumping the other person for information. Lady Erin knows virtually all the gossip of the nobility and rich merchants of Sarkotos as well as many private facts with regard to these people and has a small mole on her right cheek.
Baron "Wardog" Muckdigger
Baron "Wardog" Muckdigger is the lord of a small holding in east Doxenia, of which he is the seventh heir. He is a short man, clean shaven with a very upright posture. Wardog is a fighter famous for his incredible stamina and his leadership abilities as well as his alleged ability as musical composition (his words are described as being more like the sounds of war than actual music!). Beside composing music, the baron's greatest love is war, and he will use almost any excuse to take up arms against anyone he thinks might prove to be an interesting adversary. The baron has a rather blunt and direct way of dealing with people, but mixes it with enough charm to avoid being abusive. he knows a lot about military tactics, different military organizations and how to defeat them, but virtually nothing about the back-room politics in Doxeni. The baron always talks in a loud voice with his head stuck right in your face, so you can smell the heavy garlic on his breath.
Miriam
Miriam works for Mama Kayla at one of the local brothels in Navahla, Sarkotos, though she has higher aspirations for herself than being a whore her entire life. She is tall, and very curvy, gifted with a tiny waist and a large bosom that makes all the men (and some ladies) quite crazy with desire. Absolutely gifted in her chosen field, she is also able to portray herself as a refined lady with gifts in entertaining and a quick step on the dance floor. Her driving force is to accrue enough money, and enough contacts that one day a wealthy noble will fall head over heels in love with her and sweep her out of Mama K's into the life of a wealthy lady. She is intelligent and can carry on conversations about just about anything, and has learned to be an excellent listener as well as able to carry herself as a high born lady should, so perhaps her goal is not so far off! She knows much of the rumors and gossips in and around Navahla from her 'pillow talk' with so many of the men of the city. Extremely long black hair, blue eyes, pouting red lips and a heaving bosom; that is how most remember Miriam.
Bijou Attewater
Lady Bijou Attewater was once the scourge of the surrounding countryside outside of Attewater Manor in Sarkotos, until the curly blonde vampire met a hunter named Alexander. Bijou is 5'9", with pale skin, piercing blue eyes and a head full of loose golden curls. Killing was an art to this lady of the night, until she was shown another way, and now she aids the side of good with her fighting skills. Alexander is her life, her love, her reason for existence and it was through the unseen and unimaginable power of love that she moved from the dark to the light. Without Alexander, it is questionable whether she could maintain that tenuous drift to the dark and evil, though not impossible and with his guidance she is now far more of a boon to the countryside than a bane. She has given many in the area jobs at her manor, and invites all weary adventurers or travelers to camp on her grounds and eat at her table. She is beautiful, pale and mysterious but most would remember her as the vampire that love transformed.
Kyanee Yriskan
Kyanee is an eighteen year old aventi serving upon the pirate ship, the Twisted Sigil under Captain Solanine Tyr'avin as their Prelate. She appears human save for the collapsible fins on her forelimbs, and has long light brown hair and brown eyes. She is a gifted priestess, with skills in healing that she uses for everyone on board the ship with a special bond with Grayson, whom summoned her to the ship in the first place. Some say she is obsessed with Grayson, and truly she would give her life for his well being, but she is also a kind, carefree and loyal young woman on all counts. She is curious, and a bit mischievous, which does get her in trouble with her fellow sailors but for the most part they recognize the absolute necessity of her duties of priestess and healer and respect the aventi woman for she works hard and steadfast for the Twisted Sigil. Whether a sailor upon the Sigil or not, if someone is in need of anything she is gifted with including healing, she is first to offer such aid. She is one of the few known aventi in the area, and combined with the fact she has no sense of modesty it seems and enjoys showing off her body with pride, she is known to sailors as the 'naked fish girl'.
