restless impulse: After skulking through Sarkotos' seedier establishments, Maedria had gleaned a few tidbits of information regarding various jobs that were required. Of course, while she was not in a position to quibble having to restart her entire life on this ill begotten continent she was still exercising a degree of pickiness - investigating the employment opportunities that would have the most gains. It was one such job that had perked her interest as she sat inside the Blind Beggar tavern musing over the details just divulged by a kindred spirit. The pay was perhaps lower than she would have liked, but what mainly caught her eye was the target. Jareth Arkille, apparently a high elf. Disgusting creatures full of their own sense of superiority. The Fountainhead Guild wished to acquire the Ioun Stone in his possession, and she would almost (though not quite) take on this job for free if it meant rubbing its loss in his face at every available opportunity .. she would have to be careful, lest her own gloating finds her caught after the fact. A smirk twisted dark lips as she rose from her chair and tossed a few coppers at the barkeep and divested herself of this foul establishment and froward clientele. She would accept this job.

restless impulse: It took only a day of preparation before she was sure she could undertake this task. Having tracked down and accosted a go between for the Fountainhead Guild - the officials themselves unwilling to directly consort with a would-be thief and incriminate themselves after the fact - she had learned the necessaries required to meet up once the job was done and payment would be traded for Ioun Stone. And so she would secure herself transportation from Sarkotos to Doxenia, Westby in particular. The journey itself was uneventful. She was long accustomed to the stares of the peasants as they encountered a member of the Drow race, and long since learned the power of a hard crimson stare to shut down any attempts to inconvenience her person. It took two days of travel by carriage to arrive in Doxenia with one stop over in Bryony before she found herself standing in front of the Allee Cat Inn, the location the Guild purported would soon contain the target Jaereth. She had purposefully arrived a day before his assumed appearance so that she could observe the common goings on within the Inn itself, examine the building and any pitfalls contained therein while making her presence somewhat more innocent in nature: if she was here first, he could not feel pursued, in theory.
restless impulse: "You, Sir. A room, for five days." Her manner was perhaps a bit brusque with the innkeep as she made her sinuous way into the building, but it often proved necessary as it gave them little room to balk at her. Concealing a sneer as she looked at the rather portly individual and fished out her coinpouch from a concealed location: loosening the strings and displaying the contents. "The colour of my gold is the same as yours, Lani." Her accented voice slipped easily from her lips, the flash of gold within the purse forestalling his objections, the man visibly weighing the pros and cons before finally deciding to take the risk and turned his logbook to her: and Maedria began haggling over the price of a single room with small amenities before she signed the logbook. Gloved fingers gripped the proferred quill and once dipped in the ink sped across the blank page: Felyndra Kenurden. She would not sign her own truename, nor the name she used in day to day life - rather, she had chosen a name of suitably Drow origin while masking her own identity. The best lies, held a little truth. Once accomplished the Innkeep accepted the agreed upon amount and gave her the key to her room, upon which she would take her leave of the common room and ascend the stairs leading to the dormitories.

restless impulse: Once that was all taken care of she made her way back down the stairs and back to the common area: handing over another coin to the innkeeper in exchange for a drink before settling down at one of the tables that gave a decent view of the main door to the Allee Cat Inn. Here she would wait, keen eyes observing the basic activity of the Inn itself: marking the coming and goings of the patrons, taking into account the ebb and flow of activity within the building. The Inn saw its most business just around the time for evening meal when most laborers had finished for the day and decided to stop in for a quick pint or two before going home to their lady wife. An unblinking stare quickly stopped most in their tracks, and while she had to become a little bit more forceful with one sodden individual for the most part the evening passed unremarkably. Maedria would wait in the common area until the Innkeep expressed his desire to go to his own bed long after the room had emptied of all other patrons, retiring to her room only to sit on the edge of her bed in the dark, and wait. Like all other elves, Drow were incredibly patient, and while an hour, maybe two passed she remained motionless in her room until she felt that the innkeep and his family had since bedded down and fallen asleep. It was then that she would change her clothes from the basic travellers attire she had donned for the journey and pull on the form fitting black hide and simple cotton that would allow her to blend in more accurately with her surroundings, hair of brilliant white braided back close to her skull with a hood pulled back to mask its colour: leaving her as merely a silhouette of darkness against the backdrop of her room. Slowly and carefully, she opened the door to her room and crept out into the hall, stepping as quietly on the floorboards as she could, the background noise of the Inn having significantly dropped to the point where even her breathing could be heard. From here, she would retrace her earlier steps, moving silently through the halls while examining as much as she could [ Darksight, ability to see in total darkness up to 60 feet ] to discern whether anything changed during the evening hours.

After a moments consideration she turned the key in her door and moved it to one side, selecting a set of tools from her belt and testing them against the lock itself.

It opened with a small creak, but it was nothing to be concerned about, and she filed that information away after closing it. Carefully she returned to her bed and peeled away her working clothes, hiding them under the mattress and settling down for what she hoped would be a good nights rest: she had a lot of work to do the next day, as her source had inferred that would be Arkille's arrival.

So she was in good spirits after she had washed and dressed in normal clothing and moved to the common room for breakfast and another days observation. The bustle of the Inn was somewhat different from the day before as the other patrons gossiped over breakfast: and without straining her ears she took the time while chewing to eavesdrop on their conversations to see if there was any mention of midnight disturbances.

And so it would begin, the vigil of her second day, the dark skinned woman settling comfortably at her table and idly passing the time as she kept a keen ear and keen eye out for the entrance of the elf. It would only be a few hours before she was rewarded for her efforts; a sense of bile rising up in her stomach as she saw the pale skinned blonde haired abomination push open the door imperiously and weasel his way in. She resisted the urge to stand up and confront him, the pros for pulling this job off far outweighing any benefit she would get from physically accosting him .. and the coin she had thus far funneled into this endeavor would never be returned if she did not succeed. And so she would wait, watching the smug creature discourse with the innkeep, hand over some gold and sign the logbook before making his way to the dormitories in much the same way she had done the day before. Only this time, once the elf had disappeared Maedria would find herself traversing the room like a cat, moving up to the innkeep with what she hoped was a warm disarming smile upon her face as she lifted her coinpurse from her side. "Please, Lani, a drink if you will? I feel like something old, dry and perhaps a little sweet .. do you have any wines that fit that description?" As she spoke the man seemed a little surprised but shrugged it off - elves were strange beings after all - and as he turned to the drinks selection behind him, Maedria would take it upon herself to try and steal the logbook.

Taking the glass from the innkeep she paid what she owed and went back to her table to dwell over the information she had earned. A quick plan formed within her mind, and leaving the glass unmolested for some other lucky patron she made her way to the dormitories and moved up the hall as if she owned the place. There was no need to sneak, it was midday in a busy establishment and so there was nothing unusual in one lone individual traversing the halls .. once she had reached his room however, she would move off around the corner and hide herself away and begin to wait patiently.

It would do no good to be seen directly by the disgusting creature: as they held the same animosity for Drow that she did for them it would surely cause problems if they met in the hall .. and so she would eat as quickly as she was able without drawing attention, declining the opportunity to stay in the common room until well past midnight like the previous evening to avoid the possibility of Arkille encountering her - instead slipping back to her room while she was still certain he was in his. After having eaten, she took care of the necessary ablutions using her rooms facilities and settled down on her bed to wait. It would be long, and likely very dull .. but necessary. She had learned that Arkille would be conferring with a shop elsewhere in Westby, but whether he left the Inn tonight would be of no concern: as he would surely return in order to retire to his own bed. And so it would be nightfall when she would finally stir from atop her bed, stretching her limbs and preparing herself in much the same manner as the previous evening. From beneath her mattress she would remove the clothing of her trade, slipping into the form fitting materials that enhanced her already capable abilities, her hair braided and tucked away behind the shielding expanse of a dark black hood to dull the shine, the drowess taking the time to check over her materials and equipment before standing by the door to her room and listening at the wood.

She did not wish to barge in there before the elf had chosen to sleep; she did not have access to any poisons that would knock him out successfully without killing him .. her source had been very emphatic on that note, there was to be no killing. Arkille was to wake up in the morning none the wiser until he noticed the absence of his precious Stone. And so Maedria would wait .. and wait .. and wait .. finally stretching her limbs and moving away from her hiding place once she had reasoned that enough time had passed. It was only when she reached the door and examined the locks closely however, that she noticed Arkille had made his own adjustments to the door. They had not been present earlier, she reasoned, because the arrogant elf had assumed that its most precious cargo would be himself and the Stone, and would be at their most vulnerable while asleep. So now she would proceed with further caution, spending a goodly amount of time examining the lock. [Trap Sense] And after a time, that third sense niggled at the back of her mind and told her that the lock was far from unprotected this time .. but that would not be an issue. restless impulse: Satisfied with her findings, she returned to her room as quietly as she could and closed the door behind her: while in the secrecy of her room, she knelt down in front of the door and spent some time examining the lock .. from her observations out in the hall, she had not noticed any distinctive difference between the doors no matter the room price, though while she could not determine whether Arkille would bring his own methods of barring the door she was confident that it would not be much harder than her own. After a moments consideration she turned the key in her door and moved it to one side, selecting a set of tools from her belt and testing them against the lock itself.

restless impulse: The lock sprung open almost before she touched it, the mechanism moving with barely a sound. Satisfied, she would lock the door again before moving to the single window within her room: running fingers along the edge and testing its stability before pulling at the catch that would allow it to open. It opened with a small creak, but it was nothing to be concerned about, and she filed that information away after closing it. Carefully she returned to her bed and peeled away her working clothes, hiding them under the mattress and settling down for what she hoped would be a good nights rest: she had a lot of work to do the next day, as her source had inferred that would be Arkille's arrival.

restless impulse: Maedria slept deeply and efficiently, rising when her body deemed she had gained enough sleep and found that she was completely refreshed from the arduous toils of the day before: her muscles did not ache from the lengthy carriage nor her efforts from the previous evening. So she was in good spirits after she had washed and dressed in normal clothing and moved to the common room for breakfast and another days observation. The bustle of the Inn was somewhat different from the day before as the other patrons gossiped over breakfast: and without straining her ears she took the time while chewing to eavesdrop on their conversations to see if there was any mention of midnight disturbances.

restless impulse: As she thought, if anyone had somehow heard her movements from the previous evening they had chalked it up to an erring cat or figment of their imagination, the other patrons busy discussing the state of the local weather and various other sundries. I feel like something old, dry and perhaps a little sweet .. do you have any wines that fit that description?" As she spoke the man seemed a little surprised but shrugged it off - elves were strange beings after all - and as he turned to the drinks selection behind him, Maedria would take it upon herself to try and steal the logbook.

restless impulse: The book walked into her grasp as easy as pie, crimson gaze quickly scanning down the list of names until she found the newest addition where the ink was still slightly wet. restless impulse: It took merely seconds to discern the room number, and before the innkeeper had even returned with a glass almost filled to the brim with wine the book was returned to its original place and no one was the wiser, the only change being the slight smirk that had alighted on dark features.

As she had hoped, Arkille had left his rooms to take his evening repast. As quickly as she dared, she moved to the door of his room and bent over the lock taking it all in before removing her tools from her person and applying them discreetly.

restless impulse: After testing the door with a small tug, she put her tools away and moved back to her own room where she would wait until she heard soft elven footsteps return down the hall. Straining her ears, only once she had heard the door open and close would she leave and move to the common room for her evening meal. From beneath her mattress she would remove the clothing of her trade, slipping into the form fitting materials that enhanced her already capable abilities, her hair braided and tucked away behind the shielding expanse of a dark black hood to dull the shine, the drowess taking the time to check over her materials and equipment before standing by the door to her room and listening at the wood.

restless impulse: While it was not the most comfortable position in the world, she was able to remain out of sight as her eyes were trained on the door. After an undetermined amount of time, the light went out and she felt that the elf was finally choosing to go to sleep: but just to be sure, she chose to remain in her current position for a while longer, barely daring to breathe as she counted down inside her head and estimated the time. Narrowing her eyes, she peered intently through the darkness and selected a series of small tools from her belt: carefully applying each to the lock in order to test it and puzzle out the traps origin and design .. before applying what she believed to be the fix.
restless impulse: [ Improved Disable Device: can disarm one trap per adventure with no roll required. ]
restless impulse: After a moment the faint glow within the lock subsided, indicating that the trap that was there was armed no longer. Nodding to herself, she put those trap specific tools away before selecting her more lock appropriate items; examining the lock itself. Yes, he had made some adjustments to the lock also .. accurately assuming that it would be childs play to open in its original state. However, he had not taken into account a woman such as Maedria.

restless impulse: She fumbled just a little, possibly due to the stress, but nevertheless the lock popped open with nary a sound and she was able to slowly push against the door. It made no sound, and she could hear the slow steady rhythm of the elves sleeping breaths as she entered the room: keen eyes cutting through the darkness. There was nothing much changed from her earlier visit save that there were clothes slung over the chest, a stack of books piled precariously on the nightstand next to a melted candle, and the elf himself was sprawled across the bed. Barely daring to breathe, she closed the door behind her and stood in the center of the room .. carefully scanning her eyes over every thing she could see, trying to take it all in while not taking so long as to risk discovery.

restless impulse: Her breath quickened. Arkille moved slightly and as he did so, she could spy the thick cord around his neck that led to a small pouch .. she had assumed that his Stone would still be active, floating around his head and just begging to be snatched out of the air. But no. The source had said he slept with it .. slowly she crept up to his bed, pausing with every shift in breath or noise from the outside ready to flee at a moment notice. When nothing untoward happened, she leant over his body and stared intently at the cord around his neck. She made a decision, it would be just like slicing open a coinpurse and catching the contents before they fell to the ground .. only in this instance it would be a cord and a pouch.

restless impulse: She barely dared to breathe as she extracted a small dagger from her waist and used its keen edge to snick through the cord around his neck to either side of the pouch, letting the main body of it fall freely into her waiting hand. He would probably not notice its absence until the morning unless he needed to make a midnight visit to the john .. in which case, she better not hang around gloating! She didn't bother checking to see if the contents of the pouch held the stone: she could feel its shape through the cloth and for now that was all the confirmation she needed, the drowess slowly walking back towards the door as silently and as slowly as she dared. But before she reached the door she spied something interesting .. and so took it upon herself to steal it, opportunist that she was. She would examine it properly once she was out of harms way, but for now she may as well take something that could ensure her evening was a well spent one.

restless impulse: Opening the door, she slipped out of his room and crept back to her own as quickly as she dared .. and once inside she was a flurry of motion. Her things were already packed and her bed made, the pouch she had stolen from Arkille was shoved into her main bag as she stalked quickly towards her bedroom window and opened it to let in the nights air. From her room she climbed out onto the ledge, balancing precariously as she closed the window behind her. [Nimble Feet; successful acrobatics on precarious surface without roll] Looking down she threw all notions of stealth to the wind as she focused on her bloodline and activated one of the few gifts her mother had granted her outside of her awe inspiring physical form and stepped off the ledge .. Other than that she could not say, but as there had been nothing else in Arkille's room fitting the description she was confident that she had the right Stone .. and should her contact choose to argue that what she had discovered was a fake? She would easily take her payment from him, forcefully if necessary. With that in mind she secured the Stone back within the pouch, and waited for the trade to take place .. she would not have to wait long, and would soon be on her way back to Sarkotos and out of the path of danger, her job successfully completed.
