A brief foreword to the players of Obsidian Heart RPG;
For those of you who know me I apologize for the recap. For those that do not, my name is Jake. I am a proud member of the Obsidian Heart RPG. I have the good luck to serve in the position of both Combat & Missions Moderator. I am many things, Marine, Cowboy, Southerner to name a few. One thing I am though, is a nerd. I love RP. I first fell in love with it with Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (yup...the tabletop game). I've danced with RP in all forms; tabletop, books, video games, etc.. The one thing I always return to, is online RP. This game, OH, is my escape. It's the one bit of fun I get to have in my hectic life. It's my little island of 'me time'. So, this is my attempt at trying to make something for this game in hopes it will enrich all our play time.
Thank you all for playing in this game. It means the world to me. Without the players....there is no game. Just words.
~Jake
Role Playing Project Overview
There have been a few contests in our beloved game thus far. Each of them born of an original idea, made with hope and creativity, though all have fallen just shy of the true intent. When was the last time any of you read a scroll? When was the last time you felt antagonized? This is not the fault of the contest creator, this is not the fault of the player, this is something that happens from time to time. Good intentions often times do not pay out as we wish. So it has taken me a little while to read over old logs of PSLs, matches, missions and adventures and see what was perhaps the one thing in common that may have lead to their failure. I found that while the contests were original, and the characters unique, one thing that they all lacked was a sense of togetherness. Each character in these contests was designed to stand alone. They were thrust into life in a point where the player should have a feel for them, something gained only with experience and playing with that character. When the player couldn't quite find that, they had nothing there to lean back upon. There was no moral support, the characters had no allies, no enemies, nothing that the writer could look back upon and draw forth new inspiration. Thus, many of these characters were placed upon a shelf and forgotten or absorbed into other characters and thus lost forever.
I have always believed that the root of any good role playing games is the players being together. To have the players' characters united and joined with some common purpose, or to have them oppose one another in continuous highs and lows. To let no outside elements control our characters or their actions. To have a general theme and purpose, to be with and write with other people. We as creative writers need that spark, that draw, the excitement of good story with other creative minds. The whole purpose of a game like ours, is to play with one another! If it wasn't we would all just write stories by ourselves, alone. How boring would that be?
So with that said, I offer you not a contest, but a chance to rekindle old flames of writing, to spark to life new ones, to get to know each other as writers and as players. To marvel at what feats characters joined with a purpose can do. What it means to have a creative support group. What it means to play.

How This Is Different Than Other Contests
This is not like the contests of before. As mentioned this is a project to draw players together. Your character is going to be part of a group (detailed below). This means they are with the group. They interact with the group. They belong with the group. This does not mean you have to be friends, lovers, family, anything. I bet right now in your work there are people you dislike, but, they are still part of your work. So all the characters will know--on some level--each other and work together. There will be adventures for this group, missions, Message Board threads and the like.
- If you decide you wish to get rid of this character you do NOT get to transfer all the XP. You only get the difference between current amount minus the gifted 180.
- You may transfer no gold/items/loot/etc. out.
- This character WILL take up on of your allotted character slots in our game.
- Your character is part of this group, which means you are not making this character to go romp off with another character not of this project. Sure, they may explore once in a while, but this project is used to draw people together beneath one flag. NOT so you can make a character and stay clear of the reason they exist. Now this might seem harsh, but if you are found to constantly drift away from the group, or isolate yourself within, then you may be asked to leave, and by that, lose the character. I am designing this to bring people together with a purpose.
The Group
The group you belong to is a nomadic band of....well Jack-of-All-Trades. The lot of you have been called everything from sell-swords, thieves, nomads and the like. Your group picks up odd jobs here and there, does what it can to survive and carry on. This group has become like a family (for the better or worse of the term). You may like everyone, you may dislike everyone, but you all work together and need one another.
How This Will Work
If this sounds like something that appeals to you, then begin thinking of your character concept. Today is November 11th 2013. Between now and Sunday (November 17th) send me an email (Click Here) with your character name, race, a picture for them, and a small tidbt of their personality along with the screen name you are going to use for them.
What I will do then is post what you send up with all the others of this project on the MB. Then I will allow another few days for you players to get to know one another and write your backstories together if you wish. That way you have at least some small bit of story already going for you all. do you have to write with others? No. But wouldn't it be nice to have some story already laid as ground work?
